Yesterday’s most interesting World Series of Poker final was played in the $5,000 pot limit omaha format. The most famous poker players in the final table were Cliff Josephy aka JohnnyBax and Sorel Mizzi.
Canadian Sorel Mizzi has a bit ambiguous reputation in the poker world. On the other hand people see that he is obviously great poker player who has won several major online poker tournaments and over $1 million from live tournaments. However, on the other hand he has been caught two times cheating in the online poker tables. Sorel Mizzi used to use several online poker nicks to confuse his opponents and to gain advantage. When the sites he was playing on discovered what was going on he got banned from playing on them and the fact he had been cheating was made public.
In this WSOP tournament Sorel Mizzi managed to make his all the way to the final three. In addition to Sorel the two players to make it that far were Cliff Jospehy and Richard Austin, who had been playing extremely cautiously throughout the whole final day.
However that all changed in the final hand when Richard Austin decided to change the gears and play power poker. On level 25,000/50,000 Richard open limed from the button, Sorel completed the small blind and Cliff Josephy made it 150,000 more to go. Austin decided to just call the raise by Cliff, however Sorel decided it was time to make a move and made it 750,000 to go. Cliff Jospehy had only 195,000 chips left and obviously called, however it was a tough decision for Richard who before the hand covered both players. After some pondering Richard decided to call the raise as well. The flop came down K 9 3 with two clubs and after Sorel moved all in for 680,000 chips Austin made the call.
When the cards were flipped over it looked like Cliff Jospehy would be the likely winner of the hand. Cliff had KKA8, Sorel had AA53 and Austin had QJ85 with a flush draw. The turn brought “blank” 8, however when the river was 7 of clubs completing Austin’s flush draw he could start celebrating his WSOP victory.
Coming into this tournament Richard Austin has never even finished in the money in a WSOP tournament. Now he has a WSOP bracelet and is $400,000 richer.
Even though Sorel and Cliff Jospehy got knocked out in the same hand Sorel was awarded the 2nd place money as he had more chips than Cliff at the beginning of the hand.
