According to the Hollywood Reporter Paramount Pictures has picked up a new untitled pitch by David Levien and Brian Koppelman. The movie would take place in the world of online casino and poker rooms. For some reason the Hollywood Reporter story they specify that it would take place in the world of Costa Rica based online casinos. Even though these days majority of the online casinos and poker rooms come from out side Costa Rica.
Assuming the report is correct and it does indeed for a reason specify that it takes place among the Costa Rica based online casinos one might expect the storyline to be something shady. The only things about Costa Rican online casinos that have caught the major media’s attention in last years are the infamous Ultimatebet/Absolute poker scandal the owner of Bodog Calvin Ayre getting beat up. If you are unaware, there was wide spread cheating going on at UltimateBet and Absolute Poker from around 2006 to 2008.
This wouldn’t be the first poker related movie by David Levien and Brian Koppoleman. Their first poker movie was non-other than the Rounders, the best poker movie ever made. However it is worth noticing that every single poker movie that has come out after Rounders has been according to the critics and movie goer’s B-class movies, and none of them has had success in the box office.
According to the news report Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to this movie and might star in it.
It is important to note that this online casino / poker movie is still far from being made. And it is especially far from being made with Leonardo DiCaprio. Even though Leonardo DiCaprio is known to enjoy playing poker from time to time (he is also reportedly good friends with Doyle Brunson), it would be somewhat surprising to see him star from a movie about online poker.
Leonardo DiCaprio is without doubt one of the best young actors. Leonardo DiCaprio has starred in movies such as Titanic, The Blood Diamond, Departed and Revolutionary Road. The next DiCaprio movie that comes out is Shutter Island which is directed by Martin Scorsese.
